MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The state is suing a former University of Wisconsin-Whitewater dean to try to collect thousands of dollars he allegedly misspent on travel and other uses.

The university fired Howard Ross as dean of the College of Letters and Sciences in 2006 after an audit documented widespread misspending. He has remained a member of the faculty.

Ross is suing the university in federal court claiming he was subjected to the audit and unfair treatment because he is black. A state investigation previously determined Ross had no evidence of discrimination.

State lawyers representing the university filed a counterclaim against Ross this week. They say Ross recklessly ignored university policies and should be required to pay back however much misspending is proven at trial.

imho, this is another of a long line of folks who, after getting caught, believe that the charge/questioning/raised eyebrows has something, somehow to do with race, as Leonard Pitts wrote in a recent Gazette opinion column, "Detroit mayor: 'You should be ashamed'". It has to do with morality, character, and honesty, not color of skin, nationality, race or occupation...

Only black people get audited. Everyone knows that.

hartung....i'm commenting on the fact that i and others(as you see from the other posts)are tired of the race card being played. did you come on to comment on the story or just try to put someone down? stick to commenting and quit asking silly questions. if you want to defend him, have at it. but lay off other posters. you are attempting to BAIT people, not debate. i'm sure you are a wonderful person and have much insight into todays issues. please share with us.....thanks

Are you really surprised he played the race card? I am not! How many people in positions of authority or higher up positions feel they are above the laws, rules and everyone else and can get away with whatever they please. The race card is played just to muddy up the accusations. He is probably hoping the UWW will drop the charges. I am happy UWW is counter suing! There is way too much over spending by municiple, county, state and federal agencies.

As a grad of the L&S college over at UWW, I wish I could say this is a surprise... as a dean, he was not very helpful. His claims of racism because he was audited and caught are ridiculous.

Uh, mytake4u, to this point the courts and the University agree with you. Who are you complaining to?

this is not a race issue. it is a theft issue. he broke the trust of his fellow employees, the university, and ME, the tax payer. the man is dishonest. he claims the audit was because he was black. no, it's because he stole from the public and broke our trust. race relations will never, ever improve when the race card is played every time a black person gets in trouble. or, is this just another case of the white man keeping the black man down? my opinion is that he is a thief and happens to be black. innocent till proven guilty is ONLY a legal term. it does not mean we, the public, can not opine nor can it keep us from seeing the TRUTH. here comes the name calling and the defenders of thieves.
