Midwest cancels 21 flights involving MD-80 aircraft
MILWAUKEE (AP) - The number of canceled Midwest Airlines flights this morning is up to 21.
Spokesman Mike Brophy says the Milwaukee-based airline remains hopeful that the situation will be resolved by the end of the day.
The cancellations were prompted when Midwest voluntarily grounded 13 of its airplanes to re-inspect a wiring harness.
Brophy says the airline's MD-80s had been inspected by the Federal Aviation Administration and were cleared to fly -- but Midwest executives decided the planes should be re-inspected by the airline's own personnel. He says mechanics worked overnight to re-inspect the planes, resulting in the cancellation of five flights last night.
Brophy says he hopes all 13 planes will be back in service by later today. He also notes that the airline's 25 Boeing 717s aren't involved in the inspections and are still fully operational.
