Special session on Great Lakes Compact
MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Gov. Jim Doyle has called a special legislative session to ratify the Great Lakes Compact.
State lawmakers have been at loggerheads over the interstate water treaty. Republicans are concerned the compact allows governors of other Great Lakes states to block any Wisconsin request to draw water from the lakes.
Democratic state Sen. Mark Miller of Monona says the two sides have reached a compromise. Doyle called for a special session beginning April 17 to vote on the deal.
Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and New York all have signed the treaty into law. So has Quebec and Ontario.
