Council discusses city manager candidate qualities
JANESVILLE — Janesville's City Council members are using information gathered from community leaders to help form an advertisement for the next city manager.
City Council member-elect Kathy Voskuil says there's nothing about the education system, including post-secondary education. She says that talks a lot about the potential for the economy in Janesville. Voskuil also says the voters in Janesville might help entice city manager candidates. She says there was a substantial number of referendums in the recent election that did not pass throughout Wisconsin, so the high school facilities referendum that passed in Janesville says a lot about the community.
Council member-elect Yuri Rashkin says it would be important to have someone who is honest in terms of saying yes or no to a project, versus someone who will put off a project when they really mean "no".
The wording of the salary in the advertisement appears to be a slight sticking point for Council member-elect Tom McDonald. He says he doesn't know how he feels about putting "$140,000 plus or minus depending on qualifications". He says if people see $140,000 they won't take anything less than that. McDonald also says he will research the issue before making a decision.
The council has the weekend to review the job posting draft.

good point gary. That's why the city hired a recruitment company when they learned of Sheiffer's resignation. Check out the related article "Council sets ballpark salary for new manager". I'm confident that the recruiter is the person who helped compile the ad.

I would hope that the city council would consult a professional agency to help with the wording of the ad or at least to review it and make suggestions. I am sure that a lot of money will be spent placing the ad in publications. Spending a little money to make sure that it is the best possible ad would be a wise investment. I am sure that the council has good ideas and the best intentions, but I think that they could benefit from some professional advice.
