The long Janesville teacher contract talks could come to an end Wednesday.

Teachers will decide whether or not to accept a proposed contract after a year of sometimes contentious negotiations. Janesville Education Association Action Chair Steve Strieker expects a lot of interest. He says for the first time in a long time, a secret ballot will be used.

The vote takes place from 3:45 until 7:00 Wednesday night at Craig High School, with the results being released to teachers shortly after, and the public Thursday morning at 7:00.

bill...maybe if school was fun, we wouldn't need the law! Imagine, kids wanting to go to school and learning too. LOL

In all seriousness, my oldest child couldn't be kept away from school. It made it difficult when there was an illness or need to go to the doctor. My second child did well in school but was never quite as driven as the first. My third child doesn't see the need for it at all and it is a struggle but still passes the testing in the advanced range. My last child is devoted to school, loves to learn and loves to go. We were offered the gifted and talented program but because of certain things, we declined. All kids are different and all feel differently about school and it's importance regardless of what we teach them as parents. Just as we adult are all different.
I think the school needs at least 50% of the kids to show up to be counted as hours in school. Therefore, the schools perhaps are letting the kids know that they are providing a schedule that will not "be that bad" to try and get the kids to attend. As we have saw on the many blogs about it all, many parents are stating that they refuse to send their kids, so maybe if they make the kids want to be there, the kids will force the parents to bring them or allow them to go.

Regardless, if the contract did indeed pass, I hope it is a fair one for the teachers. They deserve major kudos for all the hard work they do.

Thankfully, word has it the contract was passed. I am grateful and hope that all the wounds from this long process can be healed in short time. Way to go teachers!

FYI - at the high school level, teachers were not given an option of holding class (except for advanced placement classes) nor were they given a voice in not holding class. Administration and "leadership" decided upon all-school assemblies. So, if you have a high school age child, and you don't like the assembly plan in place of academic classes, please direct your criticisms specifically to the principals and don't assume the decision had anything to do with the teachers. Nonetheless, I will be there with a smile and a good attitude to make the best of it with the students who show!

Not that I'm oppossed to making education interesting, but if it were fun, we wouldn't need a law that says kids have to go to school.

I am happy to hear the teachers are making the extra effort to make the day not only educational but fun for the kids!

Best wishes to all the teachers.

wahoo-- I see you are one of complaining taxpayers who does not respect teachers. Many teachers are planning fun, yet educational, opportunities for students next Saturday.

At least they will have something to talk about next Saturday, while they are making up the snow day, hear they plan on wasting the tax payers money by making the kids watch a basketball game. Great teaching!
