Two Walworth County granaries are recipients of more than $1.25 million in state Freight Railroad Infrastructure Improvement Program loans to upgrade their facilities.

Badger Grain, 461 W. Madison St., Darien, received $256,119, to construct a new elevator leg for loading grain, which will double the speed at which grain can be loaded onto 25-car trains.

Millard Grain, W6406 County Road A, Elkhorn, received $1,034,510, to construct a new 2,000-foot siding at Bardwell Junction that will free up existing sidetrack space near its Avalon facility, allowing the company to load 25-car trains. The loan also will be used to construct a new 250,000-bushel grain storage bin and conveyors and to repair the spur tracks and rail loadout facility at the company’s Avalon facility.

FRIIP loans are awarded to private industries, railroads and local governments to improve rail infrastructure and highway/grade crossings and to construct new rail-served facilities. As FRIIP loans are repaid, the money is used to fund new projects.

Work on the recently approved loan projects will begin this fall.
