Edgerton, Milton districts face higher levies
Taxpayers in the Edgerton and Milton school districts will probably face higher levies because of the delay in passing the state budget, officials in each district said today.
Because the deadline for figuring school aid was Oct. 15, the Legislature took $79.3 million it had planned to allocate for school aid and instead put it in the budget in the form of a school levy tax credit.
Because of the switch, Edgerton will receive $188,000 less than it expected in school aid and must make up the difference through tax levy, said business manager Mark Worthing. All but $31,000 of the increased levy will be returned to homeowners through a property tax credit.
Milton will receive $300,000 less than expected, business manager Dianne Meyer said. All but $64,000 of that will go to homeowners through the tax credit.
Both districts plan to approve budgets tonight.
