(AP) - Fewer applications for charter schools are getting approval from the state this year. The Department of Public Instruction has approved only ten of 50 applicants for federal funding. The scrutiny comes after the U.S. Department of Education reminded the state about eligibility requirements for charter schools. This year's approval rate is quite different than last year, when the state approved 100 of 121 applications. Charter schools are funded publicly and are operated by independent boards. Their chartering authority is responsible for meeting academic standards.
