Suspect in 1988 Beloit murder caught in Seattle
A Beloit man who disappeared in 1988 after his arrest for murder has been picked up by police in Washington State. Ezequiel Lopez-Zavala, 42, was picked up Friday on an outstanding warrant in Bellevue, Wash., where authorities think he has been living under an assumed identity for 15 years.
He was fingerprinted Friday night, and his true identity was revealed.
Lopez-Zavala was apprehended by Beloit and Illinois police on Sept. 19, 1988 in northern Illinois. A warrant alleging first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Beloit resident David J. Landwehr, 22, was issued the next day.
Lopez-Zavala’s family posted 10 percent of his $50,000 bond to Winnebago County, and he was released. Lopez-Zavala never showed up for his scheduled court appearances.
Lopez-Zavala is being held in custody in the King County Jail in Seattle.
