Budget provides student aid
MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Thousands of low-income University of Wisconsin students should be getting financial aid in the coming days. More than 5,700 students on a waiting list for a Wisconsin Higher Education Grant should receive aid now that the overdue state budget has been approved. The awards will be up to $2,700 for this school year. The awards might help some students pay back additional loans they took out for this semester. Other students who didn't start classes this semester because of the lack of aid might now be able to attend second semester. The new budget increases funding for the program by $26 million over the next two years. Next year, that might mean more students could see bigger grants.
