Three deer crashes in 7 minutes
Three separate highway crashes in Green County illustrates the increased danger of a colliding with a deer. Three drivers hit deer in different townships all within seven minutes of each other last night. All drivers were wearing seatbelts and weren't injured. The Wisconsin Insurance Alliance says in 2006, 45,000 collisions involved deer across Wisconsin. Six motorists died and 600 were injured. The alliance's Eric Englund says the crashes caused 100 million dollars in property damage. November is when many collisions with deer occur. The deer are on the move as hunters encroach and as they forage for food. The alliance recommends drivers slow down at daybreak or dusk, and look for deer standing along the highway. And, if you encounter a deer, brake, don't swerve.

The overwhelming majority of increased whitetail movement in the fall stems from the deer's annual rut. The buck deer roam to establish their territories and pursue does, especially in the early mornings and late evenings.
