Janesville school taxes headed up
JANESVILLE—The Janesville School Board postponed its annual duty of setting a tax levy on Tuesday night.
They’ll set the levy next Monday night instead. That’ll give officials time to gather figures from the state to determine exactly how much of a tax increase will be reflected upcoming tax bills.
There will be an increase in the portion of property taxes that supports the schools, a big one.
District business director Doug Bunton estimated the tax levy will increase by about 19 percent, due in large part to the fact that the district is beginning to pay off the referendum-approved high school construction projects.
Another factor boosting the levy is the fact that the new state budget includes no increase in equalization aid. Equalization aid is the largest single source of school revenue.
However, the state budget also increases the school levy tax credit, so the bottom line for taxpayer should be softened, perhaps to an increase of about 14 percent, Bunton told the school board Tuesday night.
However, local school officials have not yet been told the amount of the levy credit. They should have a better idea by Monday.
