Janesville budget faces more cuts

The good news: Thanks to the state budget, Janesville taxpayers can expect a smaller increase in their city taxes next year.

The bad news: Thanks to the state budget, Janesville taxpayers might see cuts in city services by 2009.

City Manager Steve Sheiffer had proposed a $17.70 tax increase in the 2008 budget he gave city council members last week.

However, a lower-than-expected levy limit in the state's budget deal requires Janesville to trim that tax increase to $8 to $9. It also requires that Sheiffer cut another $300,000 from the city's proposed budget.

Sheiffer said residents likely will notice service changes in the 2009 budget. “I expect in 2009 we will have service cuts,” he told the city council Monday.
