Whitewater house fire was minor
The fire at a Whitewater duplex Tuesday afternoon was contained quickly and caused very little damage, Fire Chief Howard Higgins said.
Ten displaced UW-Whitewater students should be able to return home soon, he added.
The fire at 406 Center St., started in the floor of a second-floor bedroom, possibly by an electrical short, he said. The exact cause has not yet been determined.
The home sustained very little smoke or water damage. Most of the damage was to the floor and a nearby wall, Higgins said.
Firefighters were able to put salvage covers over items on the lower level and much of the 80 gallons of water used to snub the fire were diverted into a bathtub, Higgins said.
He expected the 10 students temporarily displaced by the fire to be back home in a few days. The home will not be habitable until electrical repairs are made, Higgins said.
He did not have a damage estimate.
The students, a mix of young men and women in the house's two apartments, were staying in a local hotel, school and police officials said.
