Homeowners warned of letters
Rock County's Register of Deeds is warning homeowners not to get taken in by a company that offers to find a certified copy of their property deed.
National Deed Service, Inc. is sending letters to local citizens offering to provide them with a copy of the document for $69.50. Register of Deeds Randy Leyes says his office can also provide a copy, but charges only $4.
He says from what he can tell it's not illegal for the company to charge for such a service, but it's not necessary for people to pay that much money.

You are all right and I thank you for your generous offers of assistance. There is no doubt in my mind that this is a sleazy enterprise that is attempting to take advantage of residents' lack of knowledge of the services offered by our excellent register of deeds. However, I am not sure that what the National Deed Service is doing is illegal under current law. I do think that it should be and I would like people to consider some of the many other things that are being done to us legally and under the protection of the law.

How's this. Would you pay someone $70 to go to McDonald's and get a value meal for you?

If you don't mind a 1750% increase, I'll wash your car and cook your burgers.

You can also wash your own car or cook your own burger for much less than it costs to have someone else do it for you. So I guess also don't get "taken in" by any of the companies that charge for these services.
