Staskal expected in court
MADISON, Wis. (ap) - A man found mentally not responsible for stabbing his sister to death 23 years ago is due for a status conference. Mark Staskal was released to a group home in Eau Claire earlier this month as part of a court-ordered conditional release plan, even though his parents contended he wasn't ready for it because of his paranoid schizophrenia. After widespread opposition to the move in Eau Claire, Staskal was returned last week to the Mendota Mental Health Institute in Madison. The status conference is this afternoon in Rock County Circuit Court. It could include scheduling more hearings about the 44-year-old Staskal's status. He was found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect in the death of his sister at their Milton home back in 1984.
