Bill would ban text messaging while driving

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Wisconsin would become the third state to make text messaging while driving illegal under a bill to be introduced in the state Senate. The proposal by Republican Senator Alan Lasee of DePere is part of a growing national trend to cut down on distractions while driving. Lasee says it is a particular problem for young people who are more comfortable sending text messages. New Jersey and Washington state passed laws this year specifically banning texting while driving. Five states and the District of Columbia have laws prohibiting drivers from using hand-held mobile phones except in emergencies. Another bill pending in the Wisconsin Legislature would ban cell phone use for teen drivers.

I am for the ban in all states. My mother was in a head on collision down south and so seriously injured she was in the hospital for a month. The 19 year old girl who was text messaging while driving crossed into her lane and died in the accident leaving a 6 month old baby motherless. The last thing that girl did was send a text message. It doesnt matter what age you are. Teens and adults should be treated equally in this. I am a strong advocate for this behavior to stop. The people who say this is dumb I hope you never have to find out the hard way how dangerous this is. A month in the hospital in severe pain might change your mind.

I think this ban is a good idea. I cannot stand the teenagers who think they are invincible, I am not saying that I never thought that, but now I look back and see how dumb I was. This might save some lives if teens know there is a big consequence to driving and texting. I know that the threat of being fined $400 for the first offense would deter me from texting....not that I do, but if I did. Also, if the texting causes an accident that person will be facing jail time for reckless endangerment. That sounds like good reasons for people to not text and drive.

A side not to PaisleysDaddy: No, you don't have to look at your phone to send a text, but can you explain how you would return a text if you didn't look at your phone to read it. Maybe your right, maybe we should get rid of ALL the driving luxuries.....come on, be reasonable. Not all the luxuries are distracting. This bill is also aimed more at the younger generation, in hopes that the more experienced already realize this is wrong, whether or not they do it.

Here's another law that is just going to be used to pull "suspicious" people over, and the police can say: "I thought I saw you texting on your cell phone...since I'm here, I need to check your vehicle."

I agree that it is distracting to text or make calls, but SO many other things are also distracting. I'm not sure how I feel about it all.

Ban cell phones completely when driving. Pull over to the side of the road if you need to make a phone call. I can't count the number of times I have been "cut off" by other drivers and guess what??? They're on their cell phone!

Maybe we should have a law against talking while driving. That's distracting too. All of this is covered under "inattentive driving". More laws won't solve the problem. Taking away their privledge to drive may.

My question , Who will enforce this , I drive semi , you don't even see a state patrol but mabe 3 times a week and I drive 2 to 3,000 miles a week . Quit making up bills and get the police to enforce the driving laws out there . if you are texting and get in a accident , Isn't that inattentive driving anyhow ?

This is needed. To everybody that thinks this band is dumb. Think about this, My child is learning how to drive. We stoped at a stop light and guess what happened? Out came the phone and off when a text message. Do you think these kids are good enough drivers that they can text and drive at the same time? Remember this the next time you think this band is dumb!!!

Ah, balogna. If you're good enough at texting, you don't even need to look at your phone. What's next? Gonna ban me from flipping through the stations on the xm channels that came with my new truck? Yes, i agree, it's all a distraction. If we really want to solve the problem, then we need to remove all the luxuries we have added to our transportation, and leave it at that, just transportation.
