UNDATED (AP) - Department of Natural Resources wardens say the opening weekend for the gun deer season was a successful one. The cool weather and the fact deer are still mating helped hunters. Less wind and more snow would have been nice, but warden Mike Young in Outagamie County says the weekend was one of the better openings he's seen in his 20 years on the job. Because it's cooler, hunters didn't have to rush from the woods to register their deer. Colwitz's BP Convenience Store in Shiocton was among places reporting registrations well above last year. The DNR says nearly 630,000 hunters have licenses for the nine-day gun season.
