Beloit to consider electric vehicles

In the near future, people could start cruising the streets of Beloit in neighborhood electric vehicles.

Assistant City Manager Steve Gregg says a Janesville company is approaching Rock County communities about allowing the vehicles. The ordinance would permit electric vehicles that meet state and federal guidelines to operate on Beloit streets where the speed limit is no more than 35 miles per hour. The vehicles would be allowed to cross streets with faster speed limits. Gregg says he's recommending approval of the ordinance to give Beloit residents another option for transportation within the community.

The City Council will hear the first reading of the ordinance Monday.

hehehe...any car smaller than your full-sized pick up is a death trap if you drive like most other SUV and pick up truck drivers in Janesville. You're not concerned about gas prices, wahoo?

These things look like a death trap! I will just keep my full sized pick up. Thank you!

Further research on greenautos.com finds that the WI Assembly and Senate tabled a bill in October that "requires the WISDOT to register and license NEV's." It appears that Sheridan is a cosponsor of this bill.

"Passage of this amendment, which does not appear to have any opposition, will make it easier for NEV ordinances to be passed throughout Wisconsin. It is anticipated this amendment will come up for approval this fall or next spring at the latest."

I would buy one in a heartbeat if Janesville would pass an ordinance to allow them. I live in town and work/shop within a 10 mile radius of my home. I'd love to utilize one of these clean and energy efficient vehicles. If licensing/costs is the factor, put the burden on the dealers---it sounds like they are willing to do it. Many of the larger auto dealerships are set up to handle the DMV paperwork for cars, so what's the big difference? Maybe we should contact our city council members again...I think it only takes two to bring something to the table.

I recall a Gazette editorial back in August that reported on a similar proposal in Janesville. When the Janesville City Council was approached by the owner of Green Autos to consider passing an ordinance that would allow NEVs on Jvl city streets, it was recommended by the Council president that city staff do some research and make a recommendation about such an ordinance. It was recommended that no ordinance be passed at that time. The concern of city staff was the amount of time and expense it would require to register the vehicles. The owner of Green Autos offered to donate $150 needed to purchase 50 license plates and stickers. I would like to hear more about how much time and expense it would cost city workers to register these vehicles, and why Beloit might be able to take such a "burden" on, but Janesville is not. Rest assured I'm keeping an eye on Beloit's progress!
