School board will discuss cell tower

Saying it's everything from unhealthy to ungainly, some Janesville residents are telling the school board they don't want a cell tower on Marshall Middle School property.

School Board commissioner Lori Stottler says she also has reservations about the potential health risks associated with the cell tower. Stottler says she won't vote for the lease as stated in the school board packet. She says that U.S. Cellular can break the 25-year lease with 30 days' notice, but the school district is unable to break the contract. Stottler says if there are health risks from the tower five or ten years down the road, she wants to ensure the welfare of students and faculty at Marshall.

She says if that becomes part of the agreement, she will support it.

So if School Board commissioner Lori Stottler has reservations about it from a health issue doing something about it 10 years from now isn't going to be much comfort to those who have been exposed for this period of time. Sort of like closing the barn door after the horse has left. Statistics can say what ever you want them to and I think most of realize that corporate america can make them say whatever they want whenever they want. The number of people dying from cancer who have allowed these towers near their homes is higher. I have a very good friend who is the number one (top dog) litigation attorney for one of the largest cell carriers in the world and he doesn't use a cell phone. He never tells me why, he simply gives me a wink. There are pending cases that won't come to court for years simply because the lawyers can make that happen, but if my friends estimates are correct, it will dwarf the settlements reached by the cigarette industry. Corporate America will simply bury and hide their impact within existing cancer statistics and leave burying the people who live next to them to the families. This same global carrier 7 years ago was trying to sell the cell division even though it was more profitable than all of their other divisions combined. How come? Because of the pending litigaton. They couldn't get any takers... they later merged with another very large telecommunications company and changed their name and restructured setting up large trusts to offset the cost of any future litigation.

We all know that most county, state, and federal funded programs need more money.
I haven't been keeping up with the cell tower developments--can someone please fill me in on where the funds from the lease would be allocated within the school district budget? Or has this not yet been determined?

I think that Stottler is right in demanding equal terms for discontinuation of the contract. This should be interesting to hear about after the school board meeting.

Its a new source of income that should be approved . But then again the School Board is not concerned with new income , just new ways of SPENDING!!

With all of the cuts that are being handed out in the school district (music, art, spring sing, etc), I feel it would be unwise to turn down this additional income. For all the people saying "no", is it simply a matter of not in my backyard? Do any of the naysayers have cell phones-I sure hope not. The towers have to be somewhere, why not take advantage of the income. As for the health concerns, that has been floating around for years with no proof.
