Board rejects cell phone tower
JANESVILLE The Janesville School Board voted Tuesday night not to allow a cell-phone tower on the property of Marshall Middle School. The board heard opposition from parents and neighbors of the proposed 120-foot tower who were concerned about the harm to children’s health from a tower’s radio waves, although no one pointed to conclusive proof. Board members indicated they had also heard from parents who threatened to pull their children out of Marshall and send them to the Milton School District if a tower were built. Board member Bill Sodemann said the loss in revenue from just four students would equal the income the district expected to receive from a cell tower lease. The board had preliminarily approved the tower in September and sent it to the city plan commission, which approved it 4-3. Five board members voted not to allow the lease agreement with U.S. Cellular. Three opposed the motion—Debra Kolste, Amy Rashkin and Bill Sodemann. DuWayne Severson abstained, saying he wanted to wait for more information before deciding.
