Tainted meat in Delavan
A TV crew from the Chicago CBS affiliate followed a truck load of unrefrigerated meat to a Delavan grocery store while he was researching a piece on tainted meat.
The investigative report, by Dave Savini, said a wholesale meat market in Chicago packed a non-refrigerated truck with "hundreds of pounds of fresh pork on an 85-degree day." A CBS camera crew followed the truck, which was also carrying fresh produce, to the Guanajato Dulces grocery store in downtown Delavan, Savini said.
The crew warned the driver that a health inspector was on the way and the driver took off. He was pulled over by police and the tainted meat and produce was destroyed when the inspector arrived, according to the report.
The meat had reached a temperature of 65 degrees, about 25 degrees above allowable limits, according to the report. Thawing meat juices had contaminated produce on the truck and yogurt had reached 80 degrees, according to the report.
Hector Garcia, a store operator told the cameras, "We learned our lesson."
