An overloaded power strip is being blamed for a midday residential fire in Janesville.

Fire officials say the fire at 424 South Pearl Street was kept to two rooms in the basement thanks in part to the family's early warning from a working smoke detector. Authorities say one power strip, was plugged into another one, and both were being used as an extension cord for a space heater. The power strip overloaded, and nearby combustibles caught on fire. Damage was confined to two rooms in the basement area.
