Funding for court interpreters expanded
UNDATED (AP) - Wisconsinites with limited English don't have to show they're poor to get an interpreter if they find themselves in court.
The new state budget expands the court interpreter program, providing interpreters in civil proceedings as well as criminal cases.
Carmel Capati directs the state courts interpreter program. She says the state's demographics are changing and the courts and counties need to provide greater access.
The state reimburses counties for interpreter services for indigent people in criminal and some other cases at a rate of 30 to 40 dollars an hour.
Funding for interpreter reimbursements increases about $230,000 to about one million dollars in this fiscal year and about $300,000 the following year.
