Statewide VHS rules go into effect
MADISON, Wis. (AP) - New statewide emergency rules to combat a deadly fish virus have gone into effect.
The rules prohibit out-of-state boaters from bringing water into Wisconsin in any of their equipment. All boaters must drain their live wells and bilges before leaving any state water.
Anglers also can't remove live fish from any state water. Bait harvesters can still do it legally with a permit.
The rules are designed to slow the spread of viral hemorrhagic septicemia, or VHS. The Natural Resources Board approved them earlier this month. They were published Friday morning, putting them into effect.
The board plans to consider permanent rules in December.
