Sun Prairie attorney drops Supreme Court bid
MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Sun Prairie attorney Charlie Schutze is dropping his long-shot bid for the state Supreme Court.
Schutze notified his supporters in a letter dated Dec. 27 that he is pulling out of the race due to medical problems. Schutze, 57, told the Wisconsin State Journal that he is scheduled for surgery on Thursday for a severely torn rotator cuff and he has a second February surgery for an unrelated breathing problem.
Schutze told supporters he faces months of physical rehabilitation, which would prevent him from actively campaigning in advance of the Feb. 19 primary.
Schutze did not immediately return messages left Monday at his law office. He said in the letter to his backers that all campaign donations he has received will be returned.
Still in the race is incumbent Supreme Court Justice Louis Butler and Burnett County Circuit Judge Michael Gableman. The deadline for candidates to file is Wednesday.
