JANESVILLE—A Janesville man facing charges of causing death by child neglect and obstructing an officer waived his right Thursday to a preliminary hearing in Rock County Court.

Charles R. Rivers, 34, of 171 Linn St., Janesville, told police he didn’t think his 14-month-old son, Israel Gordon, was seriously injured when the boy fell in the bathtub Dec. 8 while Rivers was holding him. Several interviews later, Rivers told police he let go of the boy, who was standing on the side of the tub.

The pathologist who performed the autopsy said the severity of the child’s injury should have been apparent to an attentive caregiver.

After the child was injured, Rivers and his girlfriend drove to Beloit with the boy and another child to buy heroin for Rivers, according to the criminal complaint.

Rivers will next appear in court at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, for a plea hearing.
