Ken Hendricks, the Janesville native who rose from roofer’s son to roofing-company billionaire, died this morning from injuries suffered in a fall at his Afton home Thursday night.

Hendricks apparently was checking on construction work above the garage of the home when he fell about 10 p.m. Emergency crews were dispatched to his house in the 4000 block of Eau Claire Road at 10:18 p.m.

Diane Hendricks, Ken’s wife, told responders that they had just returned home when Ken decided to check on the construction. When he didn’t return, she went looking for him and found Hendricks unconscious.

Hendricks suffered head injuries in the fall, and Diane had begun CPR. A deputy took over until town of Beloit EMS and city of Beloit paramedics arrived. Hendricks then was transported to Beloit Memorial Hospital and eventually transferred to Rockford Memorial Hospital.

He died at 4:48 a.m. today at Rockford Memorial Hospital, Winnebago County (Ill.) Coroner Sue Fiduccia said. An autopsy will be conducted today, she said.

Hendricks is owner of ABC Supply in Beloit and had an estimated net worth of $3.5 billion.

I have a vacation home in Eleuthera, Bahamas and was fortunate to get to know Ken & Diane Hendricks when they, too, owned a home there.
I did not know him as a business man, but as a friend. It was hard for me to equate the man I knew who was working on his ailing dune buggy, or doing repairs to his roof, with the man who was entrepreneur of the year. Although we have lost touch since he sold his home in Eleuthera,
I have never forgotten that special man and hoped that someday we would rekindle our friendship. My heart goes out to Diane and their children. This is a very sad day for the world. Don Bouchat

I am beyond shocked and saddened. I worked for ABC for almost thirteen years, and when I first started with the company I hadn't planned on staying. It was because of what I saw in both Ken and Diane that I did stay. Ken was the most grounded person I'd ever known, and showed in many ways the heart he had for his employees and his customers. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and to the family of ABC and all of the affiliate companies.

I met Mr. Hendricks once, I didn't know who he was until he left the office I was working in when a co-worker told me. He was very friendly, down to earth. He impressed me that day. I have held him in high regard with the utmost of respect ever since. What he has done for the community of Beloit and Rock County is without doubt an act of a pure generosity and compassion. The world needs more people like Ken Hendricks. My condolences to his family and friends. God Bless.

What shocking news! I have known Ken for over thirty years. My sincere condolences go out to Diane, their immediate family and his hundreds of employee family. Ken was first a roofer and after earning huge success he never forgot where he came from. I worked closely for him for two years amazed at Ken’s ability to see potential in his workers, his projects, his communities and his dreams. He will be greatly missed.

How terribly sad... my heart goes out to his family and friends. I know many people in the Janesville area that remember Mr. Hendricks long before he was featured in Enterprenuer magazine.

As a native Beloiter, there are no words to express the shock and sadness I feel. Ken, was so down to earth and understood all peoples. It amazes me as I write this, because on my way home from work, me and a co-worker were discussing looking into working for one of Ken's businesses. We talked about Ken and his acts of kindness. To the family, you are in my prayers. My hope is that the Ken Hendricks legacy of philanthropic works continues! ~Stephanie Williams

Ken had given us the use of his "Green Grid" roof for my husband's and my wedding in 2006. He was a generous visionary who truly showed everyone what a diamond in the rough Beloit could be.
You're going to be missed Ken.

My heartfelt condolences are with Diane and the family. I am proud to be an ABC employee for over 15 years and today we became a family in mourning. That is what Ken was about, his employees are all like one big family and there never will be anyone else like him.

The entire Hendricks family will be in my thoughts and prayers this holiday season. I was very good friends with on of his daughters when we were younger and all I can remember is how giving and thoughtful Ken was to his daughter (family)....he lived the American dream and his family and friends should be proud of him for that. I'm truly sorry for your loss. My deepest sympathies.

I am so sorry to hear of this tragedy. I can only think of good things about Ken Hendricks. He is a legacy that will continue along with ABC Supply forever and ever.... My heart goes out to Diane most of all. I do not know her personally except for a few times training at NSC when she would step in, but to lose the love of your life is something I couldn't even begin to try and understand. I know she has a full family and friends to help and I am glad for her.
Ken's dream of being the BEST company to work for is true in my eyes and I know many others feel the same.

Incredible generous man is an understatement. Our condolences goes out to his family, from the Rock County Gladiators. He took a chance with taking us under his wing when others would not. He had big plans for the RC Gladiators. It really puts a damper on the Holidays. We'll miss you Ken. <3

I agree w/ snookums' post! The Gazette should have been more thoughtful with this information ... there's no need to include info. about money at a time like this. The Hendricks family has done a lot for Rock County and deserves privacy and respect.

This is a terribly sad day. The Gazette did a terrible job in headlining and article writing. A great deal of respect should be offered for this man who was the greatest visionary this area has seen. This is a horrible tragedy, Ken was a great man who did so many great things for the community. I am however very dissapointed with the Gazette for being so disrespectful and choosing the Headline or for including his net worth. If you would like to share something personal about him, why not choose one of the many things he has done for Janesville or Beloit. My thoughts and prayers to his family and all that he somehow has affected.
