Blackhawk Technical College has suspended woodworking classes at its central campus, upsetting some students.

The suspension addresses “a significant safety concern,” according to a memo enclosed in the agenda packet of the Blackhawk Technical College Board, which meets Wednesday.

Dust from the woodworking classroom has been infiltrating the nearby welding lab, the memo states, and the district’s insurance company has expressed concern about air quality in the woodworking shop.

The BTC Board will hear a report on possible solutions, including moving the woodworking classes to community-based sites, at its meeting Wednesday. Students plan to attend and speak to the board.

The board meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the boardroom of the Administrative Center on the central campus, 6004 S. County G, between Janesville and Beloit.
