WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) - With the busy holiday traveling season still ahead, Wisconsin has already suffered more traffic crash deaths than a year ago.

The state Department of Transportation reported 717 people have died on state roads as of Monday morning - five more than for all of 2006 and 33 more than a year ago at this time.

Still, the agency says the deaths are far below the five-year average of 760 traffic fatalities for December 17th.

Dennis Hughes, the DOT's chief of safety programs, says the numbers are up this year in part because last year had a rare trend - far fewer crashes with more than one fatality. He says the trend is more normal this year.
