Milton commission held illegal meeting

The Milton Police Commission held an illegal meeting Thursday to discuss Chief Tom Gilland's resignation, City Clerk Nancy Zastrow said.

The commission scheduled the meeting after Gilland announced his retirement effective Jan. 7, but it failed to notify the city or the public.

The failure to post the meeting was apparently a mistake, City Attorney Mike Haas said. Actions from the meeting are invalid, and the commission will meet again Tuesday to correct its mistake.

To all of those who complain about the job the Milton elected officials are doing, what are YOU going to do about it?

I'm not disagreeing with your opinions, I am new to the area and have no ground to stand on, but I am wondering what you will actually do about it other than rant on here. If they are the slimy greedy crooks as some of you have made them out to be, how did they get elected??

I have no facts or opinions on those topics, but if you are unhappy with the way things are, would you be kind enough to voice your opinions about what should be done differently? I'm sure that it's very hard to make everybody happy. If you were elected, what would you do?

smalltowngirl, Yes! Exactlly! I feel just the same as you on this issue! You are sooooooo right! I grew up in Milton also and still think of it as a "small town". I don't want to see it destroyed by "outsiders" and those "mafia" type figures that run it now. Trust me, My family grew up in Milton politics but it was run with dignity, pride, And with "homegrown" members of the community. I am so irked at how the big shots and money greeds ruin the community now. I don't care if others disagree with how I feel on this, Its my right, and my feelings. I can express them here thankfully. If I were still living in my "home town" of Milton, I'd be running for council to represent the people of Milton and to bring back the real way a community should be run. Sure would like to meet you for coffee smalltowngirl.

Just to let you know I have lived in Milton all my life and we are not inbred, and we sure dont need to be anything like Chicago Suburbia, We are MIlton! I do however see a huge change in how Milton is run and that is why I call the head people of Milton the Mafia, They make up there own rules as they see fit for themselves. And to run in this town and to be on council you have to have money and know alot of "Big people" The average person dont matter in this town to the higher ups. Its sad but true! So all there Illigal meetings do not surprise me at all! They have prob. had meny more that we havent even herd of. And boy, to the person who leaked it out watch out Im sur the Milton Mafia will be out to get you! Thats the way they work!!! So so sad!! Its supposed to be a community that works together at least thats how it used to be. We do not need any "outsiders" comming in to change things to make it more like another city, thats prob. how this town started going to crap and not caring about "all" the people in the first place!

Hey stylebabe, obviously you don't pump gas. A 5 cent savings for 10% ethanol content isn't going to make me rich. I can't even go out in my yard the smell is so bad!!

Well if all of these people that think we are doing things all wrong in Milton run for a council seat it should be a very interesting election. But that won't happen its alot easier to sit behind your key board and run your mouths than put in the time and effort that it takes to run a city. As for Teeber please stay gone your negative attitude is something the people of Milton don't need. Seems funny that even with one incumbent not running there are still going to be just enough names to fill the current council seats that are up next year. So put up or shut up you have until January 2nd to get your papers in so get to it.And by the way our city administrator is not from Milwaukee he's from Elkhorn and does a great job for the city of Milton. Again check your facts before turning you small little minds loose. Now come Monday go to city hall and get your papers and get them filled out.

MissSassyPants..If the Milton City Administrator as well as the City Council are all a bunch of slimy crooks in your book I really hope to see your name on the ballot for the next election!!! Do you even realize how much time these men and women put into what they do?? I don't believe you have any idea! Until you have served on the council and actually have a clue what you are talking about then you may speak up!! You make yourself sound so foolish!! Identify yourself so when the election rolls around people can pencil in HA HA HA in the little box instead of coloring in a box!!! Im gonna go ahead and say you will be the one with the least votes and I hope someone that just moved here from Milwaukee or another city rolls right over you in the election. STEP IT UP OR SHUT UP until you know what your talking about and then maybe you wouldnt make yourself look so clueless!!! Find the facts before you assume everything..But hey if your gonna run for the council you better get your papers in pretty quick your days are running a little short and you'll need a lot of signatures so GOOD LUCK WITH THAT with the attitude you have!!!

Milton City Administrator as well as the City Council are all a bunch of slimy crooks in my book. First the ethanol plant now this. Granted this doesn't compare but the whole point is another "closed" meeting. One would think the council would've learned by now. It's time for new blood in Milton. As soon as I get to first shift in my job, I'm running for City Council.

Stylebabe74, are you a homeowner? I'm sure that if an ethanol plant was built next door to you, approved through an illegal closed door hearing, you would probably be bitter too. How can something like that happen? I'm guessing there is more to that story, as well as this one. What gives Milton?

The ethanol plant fiasco was the town board of Milton approved the ethanol plant to be built here without first letting the community know they were considering it. They knew people would fight it. It was to my understanding that people voted in to office were suppose to be for the people. That is not the case with these Milton officials, the officials of surrounding townships
or the judge who said that the closed door meetings were ok because it was for the better of the town. If it is illegal to have closed door meetings then it is illegal, no matter what the subject is. If I sound bitter its because I am, I have that right because the ethanol plant is my neighbor.

Actually, Teeber, Milton is so rife with nepotism and "inbreeding" that it would do well to bring in more outsiders. Look at our school district. The nepotism is sickening and couterproductive. You're right, though, we don't need Milton to become Milwaukee suburbia. What we need is a vision that brings progress more like Chicago suburbia. We need more places that can truely make a "Chicago dog" and an Italian beef sandwich... Todd is doing a fine job as adminstrator and it should be noted that his administration discovered the error of the police commission and took action. It wasn't a big deal.

This has NOTHING to do with a City Administrator or "City Officials"....A police commission is an insulated autonomous body that is not controlled by "City Officials". Therefore, no blame lies there. Don't make a mountain out of a mole hill. This is probably a simple oversight on the part of members of this commission that do not meet often enough to remember the procedure. Don't focus so much on this, but rather what decisions that may have been made. That may be where the true "story" lies. This is completely a different issue than anything to do with "legal advice" or "ethanol" related issues.

Big deal, It doesn't matter if I was wrong or not, Based on what I've seen and heard, The point is he still is trying to run Milton like Milwaukee. He needs to go! Period! Get a native Miltonite in who grew up there.

Milton City Administrator Todd Schmidt is from Elkhorn. He graduated with the class of 1993. Get your facts straight.

With the type of elected officals they have and bad legal counsel, It doesn't surprise me to see this happening again. Especially with that Milwaukee native city manager they have. He's trying to make MIlton into another "Milwaukee suburbia". He needs to go bye bye. It's a shame my hometown has gone down the tubes. Now I know why I left there.

How many illegal meetings must Milton officials hold before someone questions the quality of the legal advice they receive? One might have thought they'd learned their lesson from the ethanol plant fiasco.
