Christmas may affect a Rock County murder trial
The Christmas holiday may prolong a Rock County murder trial.
The trial of 37-year-old Byron Stewart of Beloit is scheduled to begin Monday in Rock County court. Stewart is accused in last April's shooting death of 35-year-old Carlos Lak, who was found dead in his apartment. Police say he was shot three times in the head in an apparent drug deal gone bad. During a pretrial conference Wednesday afternoon, attorney's for both the prosecution and defense told a Rock county judge they were concerned the Christmas holiday might affect the trial.
The trial is expected to last at least five days, and the jury could start deliberations the weekend before Christmas.
