JANESVILLE The Janesville School Board expelled two high school students Tuesday. Both were expelled through the end of the 2009-10 school year but could earn reinstatement starting with summer school 2008.

One student was accused of bringing a bat to school with the intention of fighting another student. To be reinstated early, he or she must accept any recommended counseling and attending the Truancy Abatement and Transitional Education program if space is available.

The other student was accused of possessing a knife with a 3.5-inch locking blade on school grounds. He or she may earn early reinstatement after completing counseling, attending the TATE program if space is available and with a recommendation from his or her Individualized Education Program (IEP) team.

In both cases, if the students are reinstated early, they must maintain satisfactory behavior, attendance and schoolwork and be restricted to school during lunch.

This brings to 11 the number of students expelled this school year, compared with 12 at this time last year.

I like how they say the kids must accept counseling and the TATE program. What kid in high school going to willingly accept this. They expelled from school they don't want to go back...they didn't want to be there in the first place.

Wouldn't it work better if they were made to meet these requirements, before they were expelled???
