ELKHORN—A Monday afternoon fire took the life of a 1-year-old black lab named ‘Moto’ and gutted a four-bedroom Victorian home at 221 S. Lincoln St.

None of the home’s residents were there at the time. Living there was John and Tracy Hauerwas and their two children, Karen, 5, and Justin, 4.

Neighbors saved the family cat, ‘Butterfly,’ but were unable to get to the dog in time, said Sharon Hoppe, Tracy’s mother. The fire was reported about 3:45 p.m.

The family, which owned the home about six years, will stay with relatives, Hoppe said.

Elkhorn Fire Chief Rod Smith was unavailable to comment while at the scene.

At least five fire departments and the Racine Fire Bells were dispatched.

The family did not yet know the cause of the fire.

A source at the scene said Walworth County fire investigators would likely be called in to determine the start of the blaze. It is believed the fire started on the first floor.
