Badgers to play Tennessee in Outback Bowl
Get ready to hear "Rocky Top" on New Year's Day, Badger football fans.
"Rocky Top" is the fight song of the Tennessee Volunteers, who accepted an invitation to play Wisconsin in the 2008 Outback Bowl. The Badgers (9-3) and Volunteers (9-4) will play January 1 in Tampa, Fla.
The Volunteers won the Southeastern Conference East Division, but they lost to LSU, 21-14, in the SEC title game Saturday.
The teams have only played once before. In the 1981 Garden State Bowl, Tennessee defeated Wisconsin, 28-21.
The Badgers will be playing in their fourth Outback Bowl, while Tennessee will be playing in its third. Wisconsin last played in the Outback Bowl in 2005, falling to Georgia 24-21. The Badgers also lost to Georgia in the 1998 Outback Bowl, 33-6.
When the bowl was still called the Hall of Fame Bowl, Wisconsin beat Duke 34-20 in 1995.
Tennessee played in the 2007 Outback Bowl, dropping a 20-10 decision to the Big Ten’s Penn State. The Vols also played in the then-called Hall of Fame Bowl in 1993, beating Boston College 38-23 in current head coach Phillip Fulmer’s first game.
