Yost has issues to address

By JOHN BARRY ( Contact )   Monday, April 21, 2008 - 12:18 p.m.

The most pressing issue for the Crew is the health of Ben Sheets' right arm. If he's shut down for any extended period of time, so are the Brewers. Why can't he keep himself in better shape in the offseason? Get Bush out of the rotation, and even if Sheets is out for awhile, bring in someone else besides Bush to take his place. Jeff Weaver?
After watching Gagne blow another save on Sunday, I can't help but wonder if he was in fact a better pitcher when he was "juiced." His fastball isn't fast, and you can't get behind major league hitters when you're relying on a 92 MPH fastball. That may end up as a $10 million flop. And why not put David Riske in on Sunday? Gagne had pitched three straight games. And will someone please tell Yost that Rickie Weeks was not, is not and never will be a lead-off hitter. I don't care what his on-base-percentage is. He strikes out way too much and swings at a ridiculous amount of bad pitches. Let Corey Hart lead off. I hope Ned has an answer for those problems because if he doesn't, it's going to be another .500 season and that don't cut it.

The Brewers are a solid third place team in the Division.

I will admit. Yost blew it last year. he's kind of making them same mistakes this year. if this continues Yost will be looking for a new job. I like Yost, but most of these comments are true. he needs to stay away from that stupid pitch count. I'm so sick of hering about pitch counts. Ben Sheets is great, he just needs to stay healthy. the brewers are on there way.

I will add that Gagne's last blown save really was only because of an error on a game ending double play by Weeks. I actually think Gagne is a bargain at $10M and like most relievers, can be a heart attack to watch, he does have 6 saves and I'm not sure the last blown save can be totally his fault.
As for Turnblow, great stuff but if not for a strikes who cares? I bet he's going to be great for another team though maybe just not us.

Bush is just bad. He can hit? He's a pitcher so that's relative. He is not a starter. Can't go more then 5 innings. He was the all-time NCAA save guy I think and that is what he should do. He's unhittable for about 2 innings. I'd like to see the Brew try him at closing a few games and see what happens. Not Ned though... he never thinks outside the batters box.

leaderofthepack, Mcclung has a 100mph. fastball. Turnbow was an all star and Dave Bush can swing the bat. Ben sheets has a complete game shutout, plus has a .98 era.

Oldtimer is a Cub fan. Forgive him. Ned's biggest trouble is Ned. We have more guys picked off base, running to 3rd on a groundball to SS, missing cut-off's, batting pitchers in the 5th then lifting them 1 batter in the 6th... jeez.! How about 1 out, Fielder up and they double steal Hardy & Braun? Yup, the old strike em out throw em out! I can go on and on. Anytime the players all luv a manager he must be bad.
Weeks - 22 K's in 90+ AB's is not what you need at leadoff. Roy Coyle would be rolling over in his grave watching this squad except Roy was also a Cub fan.

Oldtimer must be comparing Braun too his childhood hero Babe Ruth. Not a ML player? Are you crazy? The Brewers problems begin and end with Ned Yost. He has no idea how to manage a pitching staff.

Braun is having a bad month including only 2 walks versus 17 strikeouts.
He'll pull out of it. You can't ignore what he did last year. Historically he had one of the best offensive rookie seasons.

Man, that Rickie Weeks is terrible. Too bad all of those strikeouts are holding him back. He's only on pace for 145 runs scored.

Wait, what's a leadoff hitter supposed to do again?

oldtimer, feel free to give me your season tickets since you're so disappointed. I'd love to go to more games as would my daughter.

T-L-G Gabe Gross is batting .179 , and Hall is batting .200 with 23 K's in 75 at bats. If Gabe Gross could start on half of the other teams in the league, I hope he goes to someone in the Central Division because the Brewers could use the help. The team batting avg. has ranked 27th in 2008, 21st 07, and 27th '06, and 5th, 10th and 2nd in K's respectively. Time to get a new approach to hitting.
When Tony Gwynn has been off the DL, Yost refers to him as "Hey You!"
Vargas didn't need to go to the minors, he needed to go to the bullpen, or perhaps the starting rotation. Since he's 23-16 over the past two years.
And Turnblow, don't get me started. Yeah, two years ago he was good. But he ain't now. He throws a 95 mile, fastball that's as straight as an arrow, with no control.

oldtimer - Weeks and Braun are not major leaguers? Whew, And I 'spose Pete Rose is innocent too.
*
leaderofthepack - glad you are not leaderofthebrewers.
*
Gabe Gross would start on at least 50% of the ML teams. Turnblow was an All-Star 2 years ago.
*
Billy Hall, out of the everyday line-up? He's a power-hitting 3rd basemen. Braun would have been better at 3rd, I agree, but even Brauny welcomed the move.
*
Gwynn is on the DL.
*
Jim Skaalen is a much better hitting coach than Butch Wynegar.
*
You want the owner to stir things up in the clubhouse?? George Steinbrenner, leaderofthepack is paging you.
*

Ned overmanages his pitching staff, i agree, and that is why he has a gazillion pitchers on the roster.
*
Yost a player's coach? - Is Bernie Brewer a drinker?
*
Pitching contracts are a complicated thing. Vargas could not be sent to the minors without his consent. He did not consent.
*
I agree with Jon here, as a season ticket holder, and neighbors to the minority owners of the Brewers, Barry has addressed our often-mentioned fence-line commentary dead-on.

Braun is not a Major Leaguer? I think you need to stay away from the beer guy at the game oldtimer. Are you looking at this years hitting alone? His first month in left field? Lets revisit this in August.

John,
Ned Yost can be summed up in one word, PREDICTABLE. He never shows any type of imagination. He seems to run into the same bumps in the road year after year. Can you answer any of these questions?

1. Would they please cut Gabe Gross, and Derrick Turnbow?
2. Why not put Braun back at 3rd and let Bill Hall be the utility infielder he was born to be. I can handle a couple of errors if the guy gets in his comfort zone again and hits .300.
3. Would Tony Gwynn make a great leadoff hitter? If so, why does Yost act like he doesn't exist?
4. Can a pitcher go beyond the 6th inning when pitching?
5. Can we get a new hitting coach, one that focuses on making contact?
6. How can Attanasio stir things up in the clubhouse?
7. Is Ned Yost becoming a "Players Coach"?
8. Why would they cut Claudio Vargas, but retain Turnbow, Bush, and McClung?

Aren't the both of you jumping to conculsions too soon. It's only the end of April and seasons over in your eyes. I agree things aren't going well right now, but let the players play until the middle of May before you send them all to the minors.

AMEN, Iam a season ticket holder. And Iam so disgusted with Yost. Your right about Sheets, why doesnt he get him self in shape? Weeks and Bruan are not ML players and Iam beginning to wonder about Fielder. Anyway I think you hit it right on the head.
