GM workers shine in spotlight

By Jim Leute ( Contact )   February 14, 2008 - 1:56 p.m.

If there’s ever been a question about the commitment of the workers at General Motors’ truck assembly plant in Janesville, Wednesday’s production should put it to rest.

A day after learning of staggering losses and a new round of early retirement and buyout offers, Janesville workers welcomed the circus to their town when Sen. Barack Obama brought his road show to the plant.

But workers put the distractions aside and didn’t miss a beat on meeting productivity and quality goals for the day.

Workers on both shifts built a total of 65 more sport utility trucks than they were supposed to on Wednesday, and early indications are that the plant’s quality ratings for the day—as measured by the percentage of vehicles that go from the start of the line to the end without a single problem—might set a single-day record.

Kudos on a job well done, a job done under the glare of a national spotlight.

Wow, I had no idea that this story was still alive. I must have been suffering from cabin fever when that comment was made. I have been a jerk from time to time and stuck my foot in my mouth on an occasion or two, but I try not to be in the same league as some these bloggers. I do not believe that I have ever called anyone an idiot as that is much too easy. I may have implied it on occasion, or did I? I am usually much happier to let the other guy prove it and I am seldom disappointed. George Carlin said that the world is a freak show and if you are born in America, you have front row seats. All we can do is sit back and enjoy the show.

So, why is it that everything is about GM? Mercy is a much larger employer in Janesville. If Mercy went out of town, I am not too sure there would be much of a heyday.

Yes, that is true, lots of people are feeling the grinds of GM leaving town. Can we get over it PLEASE!!

GO FORD!!

Glad to oblige. If you liked everything that I say, I wouldn't have to say it, now would I? I guess it's just Obama at GM, GM, bikes at GM, teachers wages compared to wages at GM, people who hate people at GM, people who hate people who hate people at GM, awards won by GM, GM attrition, GM open during blizzard, and one or two others that I don't recall that just sometimes makes it seem to me that everything in Janesville is about GM. Not that there is anything wrong with it.

If you mean me, I was being more tongue in cheek than sword in hand-but you (should) have to admit, your first comment wasn't exactly about the story either, but more bemoaning the fact that there was one.
In reality-I look forward to many of your comments. The other ones...not so much. <---good natured ribbing

This story is about GM. Please don't attack me personally. You are in violation of one of the Prime Directives.

garyprimer, everything in janesville is about GM? I’m so sorry your copy of gazetteextra is so limited. I’ll lend you my copy. Here are links to where stories and comments about other things, local and otherwise (as well as the dreaded but apparently widely read GM stories) can be located. When you’re done with my copy, please return it, because I read the whole darn thing.

It is a dog and pony show, sir. Obama is more of a tent revival-medicine show than a circus. Although they did have clowns.

Gazette, was that a Democrat jab from the Republican right "....welcomed the circus to their town when Sen. Obama brought his road show...."

I am not so sure of the horse and pony show the Reblican candidates are putting on.
