Enjoying Rockport Pool: Janesville 'taking care' of what they own

Much has been said and written about Janesville always wanting the newest and the 'best' -- regardless of the cost to citizens. Those statements, which are generally blanket ones, go on to mention, 'the city needs to take care of what they own.' Well, I feel the city does take care of what they own and Rockport Pool is a perfect example.

As we made our first trip of the season to the pool a few weeks ago I mentioned to my son and daughter about the times when I visited the pool as a kid. That was over 30 years ago. Of course, they're at the age where their eyes roll at that comment, but it hit me…this place IS getting old!

We paid a reasonable fee and walked through a clean and well kept bathhouse, then onto the concrete jungle. Aside from a few oversized shade umbrellas, not much has changed with the deck in over 30 years. There are a few different shades of concrete from repairs and generally the deck is in good shape.

The pool itself was in excellent condition. I know a few people from the local swim team and they, along with the city helped repaint the Olympic sized pool earlier this spring. They did a fantastic job. In addition to the cosmetics of the pool, the massive pumps that keep the pool clean were doing just that - the water was crystal clear. In fact, my son mentioned that the water was cleaner than another community pool we frequent that is generally mentioned as 'cooler than Janesville's'.

While a zero entry and water slide like Fort Atkinson would be super and a splash pad like Milton was be neat, I believe the city has a solid facility on the southwest side of town. Neither of those have a high dive…talk about reliving great childhood memories!

Obviously, there will be a time in the future when the city will have to make a decision on aging facilities and Rockport will need to be a part of that conversation. Rockport Pool is getting old, but to the general user she's aging very well. I credit the our city officials (specifically parks and recreations) for giving us a safe, clean and fun place to cool off this week.

What are your thoughts?
