What's the reply to your "thank you"?

You head through the checkout line, the cashier hands you your receipt,  and you say "thank you".  I do it every day. The responses I receive are all over the board. 

Replies to my thank you are generally - sure, yep, yip (a slang yep), you got it and no problem. Rarely do I receive a "you're welcome".   I'm not saying that's right or wrong. It is what it is. 

Yes, this is a random blog but it's Saturday morning.  What do you hear after you say "thank you"?

Yesterday at Kroger: A clerk helps me look for an item in the frozen foods aisle. We ultimately can't find it, she says "sorry I guess we don't carry that anymore", I say "well thanks anyway, for your time and effort", and she says, while walking away "yup!".

Sometimes it would just be good to have the staff actually acknowledge your existence instead of continuing to chat about Friday's social event. Depending on how annoyed I am, I have at times complained to management. This usually results after an entire transaction where there was no hello, eye contact, or thank you. I too was a teen employee, but we knew when we could chat and when we had to be full on attention to the customer.

I hear another "Thank You" which of course is wrong. Seems no one knows they should say "You are welcome"

Two stops today. One bad and one good.
First at a supermarket on Mke St. where the guy at the checkout looked at the next person in line behind me while he handed me the receipt and said "there you go"...and like a dumba$$...I said "thanks" to him!
Second stop at the Subway on Milton Av. where the young woman handed me my receipt and change and looked me in the eye and said: "Thank you, I hope you enjoy your sandwich". I replied "Thank YOU, I will"

I almost always get a "You're welcome" in response to "Thank You". If someone thanks me for something I usually say "You're welcome" followed by "Have a good day/evening".

It's just basic manners. Please, thank you, bless you, excuse me, pardon me, sir, ma'am, miss, yes please, no thank you... these have been ingrained since childhood. I can be informal with friends and close family but the basics come out for everyone else.

Feduptaxpayer, First of all it is my opinion and I have a right to it, that you are nuts. Second, if we are discussing Thank You's and Your Welcome's in this blog, how come you have to throw in Walker? Can you not stick to the subject? Oh, yes, Walker fan, that explains it. I guess you realize it too that he needs all the help he can get. But as it were, Thank you for not sticking to the subject and you are Welcome to join the majority and get him out. There, my opinion.

I have been consciously trying to remember to say, "you're welcome" as much as possible lately. I had noticed that I had been saying, "no problem, no worries," or something along those lines for quite some time.

I think much of it has to do with the setting as twerp alluded to. I work at a place where the same people frequent day in and day out. I consider many of the patrons to be friends as opposed to just walking dollar signs. I feel like a "you're welcome" can come off as condescending when speaking with friends and that is why I typically default to the slang alternatives. If I am at work I also tend to say "thank YOU" in response to someone esle's "thank you."

Much depends on the setting, but you definitely hear less "thank yous and you're welcomes" nowadays. Even though my son (2) can barely pronounce them; my wife and I make sure he says them. Trick or Treating was a prime example this. When my son said "thank you" after receiving his candy most of the people were so taken back that they said "your welcome and thank you for saying, 'thank you' young man."

There used to be PSA's on learning adjectives and conjuntions. Today they are aimed at showing how to do the right thing, like not stealing. Maybe more PSA's like how to say "Why, you're very welcome" would help. It may be my own perception but it does seem there is less manners in social interactions, especially the more fleeting ones. I see it as a chance to make somebody smile with a better comeback depending on the situation and have also used the "Thank YOU" reply. For example opening the door for a veteran.

It is a sign of the times Steve, and we might as well just accept it and move on. Just as people walking around public with torn up clothes on or pants that do not cover their behinds. We had to get used to that. How about the earrings in the face? That is totally distracting and some could even say it is in certain places, disrespectful. But we move on. Yes it would be wonderful to hear Thank You's and Your Welcomes more often and everywhere but things are not the way they were when we where children and taught to respect others and treat everyone like a friend. Those days are gone and it will only get worse. It is called progress, is it not?

I had an 18 to 20 year old girl the other day say Thanks' HUN,you have got to be kidding me I thought to myself is she from Tennessee ? Home Depot in the flower garden Friday was most pleasant ! The employees were so pleasant and seemed to be very sincere,a lot of thank you's and and have a great day's ,very nice !

I would hope to get a "thank you" for doing business at their establishment. Instead, I have gotten a "here ya go" or "have a good one" when it's all over. I just chalk it up to poor training and bad manners.

I basically share Steve's experience. One response I get is "okay" - (?!?). And yes, a business establishment should thank its patrons, not the other way around. But I've gotten used to it, common courtesy became un-common decades ago :(
Too bad, it's a big part of living in a civil society. Thank you TV, movies, and liberalism.

I must be going to difference places than some of you because most often it's the employee who says "thank you, have a nice day." Generally I reply "have a good one yourself." That often leads to a second thank you.

It amazes me that some of you are so easily offended.

It depends, sometimes it is your welcome, others no problem, or anytime... For instance if I hold a door for someone and I am thanked I will say your welcome. If I help out a friend with a something and am thanked I will use one of the other refrences as it is a more informal setting. It all comes down to how familiar I am with the person and the reason for being thanked.

You have it backwards. The store employee is supposed to say "Thank You". As in 'thank you for frequenting this business which employs me, which without any customers, I would not have a job."

If they don't say thank you, I usually give them a dirty look and plan on not going back. It is too much trouble to hunt down the rude employees's boss and complain, at that time I am ready to leave the store. I would suspect that if the employee does not say thank you, it is because the supervisor did not train them to. Therefore there would be no point in complaining to the boss about the rude, untrained employee as the boss probably would not know what I am talking about.

They are not astute enough to realize that one does not have to spend his money at a store where his business is not appreciated.

I always get a response and it is always "Thank you."
I just assumed that everyone had the same experience.

Seldom do I receive a response for a thank you. It seems most businesses don’t train the employees to be polite. Some of the locally owned businesses are the worst. On a positive note, Dave’s Ace Hardware in Milton is one of the most helpful and courteous business in the area. Even though I live on the east side of Janesville, I drive to Milton for hardware needs.

Thank you's are rarely appreciated these days. Spoiled living has made us less grateful. But there are rare occasions when you can tell someone appreciates your effort, and it always makes you feel good. Your question made me think of my Grandpa who passed a couple years ago. At christmas time we would open our gifts and I loved telling Grandpa "thank you". His response was always the same. he would say "you're welcome to it". It was kind, meaningful, and always reminded me of the warmth in his heart.
