Has the mild winter softened us?

By STEVE KNOX   Friday, January 13, 2012 - 6:07 a.m.

I walked out of work and trudged through a sloppy parking lot to my snow-filled car. After a few minutes of brushing the pesky white stuff I was on my way. I flipped on WCLO to get the latest on the storm and Chet Daniels was rattling off closing after closing. Oh boy, this might be a long ride home. Nope, it really wasn't that bad.

I listened as my school districts closed after school activities. Meanwhile, I was driving posted speeds through the plowed streets in Delavan. I heard The Gathering Place was closed and many other organizations said 'no' to staying open, yet I was driving without any issues on Highway 14 at about 10 mph below the posted speed. It was a little slow to go but it wasn't horrible.

I found it ironic that I was in the garage Wednesday night pulling the snow blower into position -- while in shorts and a t-shirt. Maybe the lack of winter has softened us. A so-so snowstorm in January is usually uneventful. Yesterday's storm was a media frenzy. Folks, it's a little bit of snow. Personally, I felt like a pouncing puppy as I plodded down the city streets of Delavan during my lunch run. I wasn't looking forward to the snow but it was fun.

I know I'm not the only one who thought this was just 'another snowfall.' I had more people in my group cycling class than I expected. What do you think? Has this mild winter softened us? Remember, steer into the skid :~)

gbpacker- better yet WHAT ICE.
It cannot be real thick yet. My home pond isn't even white in color yet just sorta clear.
Oh it holds snow it must be safe now. NOT
tip- if you are going to cross a lake- do it at 100 and put the hammer down and don't brake until you get to the other side.
Idon't think I would ever do this at night either. Used to do this in Milton with my friend when I was 18 ish. Sorta freaks me out but she always said this do NOT slow down.

I also have to say that I agree with his assessment of the snowmoblers. What are people thinking? Stay off the ice.

I shouldn't admit this, but I agree with sigma40. Slow drivers in bad weather are worse than people that drive way too fast. I have a 45 mile daily commute in northern wi. On four way highway. On days that it is snowing there is nothing worse then ending up behind someone going 20 miles or more under the speed limit. If you pass them, your screwed, if you don't, your screwed. If they are that scared, they shouldn't be out.

I wish we all could be as perfect as Sigma. I have learned so much in the time spent reading the wonderful words of wisdom from this poster of extreme knowledge. Thanks Sigma40

Sigma, regular readers are all too much aware of your fearlessness with snow.
You have understand that everyone cannot drive like you do.
It takes a dozen or more sensible drivers to look out for each driver like you.

What I dont understand is that on hwy 26 speed limit is 55, when its like this people do 40mph... so when they get to milton ave when the speed limit is 40, why cant they continue to drive 40? Im talking when its late and there is hardly any traffic... high traffic a lot slower is justifiable. I'm safe..very safe. Im just not afraid of the snow, I dont tailgate, I watch all directions, crossroads... its defensive driving...watching out what others are doing as much as you are watching what you are doing. Also in my experience living in the country, if you go slow and catch the edge of the road and go in the sitch your done. If you have a little speed you can sometimes keep going enough to get yourself free. Im a safe driver and drive the speed limits when I can.. but 9 out of 10 times people driving extremely slow dont need to.... they are just afraid....which makes them dangerous.

Agree with Sigma40. New story says alcohol was not a contributing factor but obviously stupidity isn't limited to being under the influence of alcohol. As for the commute, you all were lucky. Took me nearly twice as long to get home last night. The roads were good in WI today but once I hit IL - well let's just say at least we get better plowing & salting for our ridiculous WI tax dollars.

I think we were soft long before this Winter. You can attribute some of that to circumstances like advancements in technology. Part of it is the litigious society in which we now live and how that impacts things like insurance costs. In the end, though, if you compare the post-WWII generations to those that preceded them, it's not even close. Our parents' generation (WWII) runs circles around us when it comes to toughness. This week's snowfall and certain people's reaction to it simply serves as a reminder of that.

People seem to freak over a few inches of snow. I guess closing result in nobody going to show up because there are 4 inches of snow outside. Drive slow and you will get there. You cannot hibernate becasue it is winter. I can see if you are 70-80 no going out for an event you could hurt yourself.

Yes Sigma- you are the idiot that drives the speed limit all of the time. I was just speaking of you the other day. So how do you drive 25-30 when the idiot in front of you has bald tires and is going 14??? Do you just run them down? the roads did not warrant a posted speed limit l.ast night. I was going about 25 in a 30 when I usually go 35. You CANNOT stop on snow covered road as fast as you can on a dry road. Don't need any degrees to know this!!

Im astoniched someone would be so stupid to snowmobile on lake koshkonong after how warm its been.
=
On a side note.. I drove all over last night and today at regular speed limits. Roads were fine. A lot of people crawling along, makes you wonder if they keep up maintaining their car...good tires do wonders in snow.
