We throw away $500 of food?

By STEVE KNOX   Monday, January 9, 2012 - 6:32 a.m.

I usually tune out during most commercials but last week a sentence stuck out during a Ziplock spot. The ad said we each throw away $500 of food away every year. At first I thought "no way", then I started doing my own math. Gulp, they may be right.

Everyone grumbles when we see prices skyrocket when we head to the checkout. Luckily, we have the mega-grocer Woodmans in our back yard to keep prices somewhat in line. Still, I'm guilty throwing away food some of what I purchase.

I normally cook for one so I have a ton of leftovers. After a few days those leftovers get stale (on the taste buds and in the fridge). I'd bet I dump close to 25 pounds of leftovers a year in the trash. Too much.

I spend way too much time in the produce section. Apples, bananas and grapes always make it into my body but there's some produce that ends up in the trash. The five pound bags of potatoes are a great value but I always find one or two that spoil.

I'm reevaluating my habits. While I really watch what goes in my body, I rarely watch what goes down the disposal or in the trash.

Our city council has the landfill discussion back on the agenda tonight. The city needs to get a handle on the hole that will eventually fill up. Residents have a responsibility too. I'm not saying it's as easy as a Ziplock commercial but we all need to do our part.

Do you have a Ziplock solution for our council on the landfill?

Think about the "real" cost of food product waste...the over packaging of a lot of it.
That's especially hard to deal with.
Try to buy anything in a bakery, or soup, cereal, etc. without the package sometimes costing more than the product itself.
Soda & coffee are good examples...a few cents of liquid in a manufacturing intense container.

A lot of my leftovers go outside in the back yard ( unless it's chocolate or has bones in it. ) I even shake out the crumbs at the bottom of the potato chip bag. I have never seen anything still out there the next morning. Better to feed something than toss it away. I take frozen pizzas and cut 'em in half and cook 'em half at a time. Where there's a tight budget, there's a way. :)

Think back what our Grandparents and even parents wasted, very little if anything at all. Myself and the wifey of course, waste as little as possible, but of course there is always something here and there. For instance last Monday a 5 lb ham and taters & gravy Wednesday scalloped taters and ham, last night I made a batch of split pea soup with the bone and some extras left on it. 3 nice meals with a total of 13 to 14 bucks and left over soup to boot ! So simple and soooooo good .

The 9 million- yes would like to pop a dem in the face.
I would have to assume it is Dems wanting the recall. Why would Rep recall a guy they voted for who they say is doing a good job?
It seems Dems would do this. They are always spending or taking others money when they shouldn't.

Sigma- I know this is like brain surgery thoughts but if you like the cooked kind on the stove only make HALF of the noodles and only use HALF of the cheese sauce and put the rest of the sauce in the fridge. It should last a couple weeks with all the preservatives in it!!!
Freeze it if you think you wont get to it in time. There all your daily problems solved for the day.
If you like alfredo you can use some cream, butter, plus garlic-yum, and the shake cheese and add some nutmeg to it. Very easy and you can make as much or as little as you like. You could use real parm chz or sharp cheddar if you like.

What is like .33 cents a box. Toss what you cannot eat then.
So the starving people in Africa should "WALK" to the US?
We have starving people in the US and some WONT get a job so I can understand your feelings.
But if we don't waste food and toss it in the trash what would the homeless eat?

Dont forget the billions we are spending on helping another country.
-
I would never eat mac-n-cheese from a microwave sorry. And also the "single" servings are actually for like 3 year olds.
I like the deluxe stuff that you cook on the stove.
-
Waste is part of society. I know people say we shouldnt because other people are starving. I guess those other people should get jobs, or move to places where food is abundant. Not being rude, but people shouldnt worry so much about people in other countries that cant eat. My parents always gave me that line "you finish your dinner there are kids in africa that dont eat for a week". Guess what? Not my problem, not my concern, and I still didnt finish something if I didnt like it.
-
This is inventing another problem for people..."wasting food". As if people didnt have enough to worry about now people are going to be all concerned about this...lol.

sigma- they do have single mac and cheese. Careful in the microwave it boils over and leaves pile of slim in the microwave.
Or buy a box of elbow mac and buy the shake jar of yellow cheese. It is a thin jar with dark blue wrapper. It is the same cheese they use in the "Kraft mac and cheese". I like elbow vs the yucky straight noodles in the macn chz. I used to toss those and put in elbow. I used to add this chz to the mac and chz. Then stopped all together and bought elbow and the jar-shaker stuff. I don't see it everywhere though. It is by the shake parmesan.
Woodmans does have it.

oh- ziplock solution- yes tupperware. Yes it is pricey but it is better than all the other stuff and lifetime warranty on most stuff. Have a party and it costs you nothing.

If I have left over meat or veggie I toss out the back door now vs disposal. I don't feel as bad then feeding a kitty or possum vs the disposal.
Couldn't clean off the xmas ham bone well so I tossed it out side and somebody did it for me.
I try to make smaller meals but still have leftovers and will eat most of them.
If you have a bunch try turning into somethign else. Lots of roast and veg-turn into stew or soup.
Soup is a very easy way to turn leftovers into another yummy meal. My favorite boullion now is "better than boulion. It is found by the others and it is in a jar. Is is like a paste.
If you don't think you can finish the left overs freeze them!!! It will make a quick dinner some other eve.
Also look into the tupperware items for the fridge for keeping veg and fruit-lettuce longer.
They work great. I have them in the cabinet and wasn't using them. I had a party and told myself- I have them USE THEM.
Dug up carrots from the garden in Oct. They still are fine in this container. "fridge smart" I believe they are called. Maybe all the vitamens don't remain but I bet they are just as fine as the stuff at Woodmans. All I did was wash them. I don't peel until needed.
Any lettuce goes in there too- I would say added an extra 2 weeks at least.

Much of what is thrown into the landfill can be composted: fruits/vegetables, egg shells, coffee grounds/filters, napkins/kleenex/paper towels, tea bags, lint from dryer, pet hair, leaves - the list goes on. Once these materials are broken down, they can be worked back into the soil. I bought one @ Home Depot for around $50.

I am single, and my wasted food for a year would definitely fit in a quart sized jar. I love leftovers and agree with garyprimer.

I just started reading an article in this week's People Magazine about a family whose garbage for an entire year fits into a quart glass jar. A very interesting read about taking reduce, recycle, reuse to a whole other level. That is looking at more than just food waste, but I think the premise is certainly food for thought.

If you make something for one its hard to not waste sometimes. Anything you buy in the store is rarely packaged for one. I made macaroni and cheese last night and threw half of it away. They dont sell boxes with just one or 2 servings. Im at a toss up a lot, people say its cheaper to not eat out? In or out... for me its all about the same price. I waste less eating out though because they sell 1 serving.
