One Step at a Time Camp Fishing Excursion is a Success!

By JOHN REDDY   Wednesday, July 18, 2012 - 3:50 p.m.

The end of June I had the opportunity to fish with some great kids that were attending a summer camp on Geneva Lake based at the Aurora University-George Williams Campus on Geneva Lake.

Children’s Oncology Services, Inc. offers the “One Step at a Time” summer camp for kids who are battling cancer. The camp is open to youth from ages 7-19 years of age.

Sander Berman which has been part of this wonderful program for years contacted me asking if I would be willing to guide kids on a fishing trip which would be part of the camp Excursion Program.

I was honored to accept his request being part of the campers’ adventures.

The “One Step at a Time” camp has been in existence since 1978 and has grown into a program of large proportions and has grown every year since.

Mr. Berman invited me to the camp program the final night of the last week. It was truly an emotional night seeing how many youth, counselors and volunteers are involved in the program.

The camaraderie and friendships that were formed over the weeks and years was very apparent that magical night.

Mr. Berman and I have already discussed next year’s activities and into the future.

Putting it all into perspective I wish I could have taken each and every camper out fishing that day. The kids that I had the chance to fish with were wonderful and were full of spirit and for some of them was the first time they had ever wet a line.

The highlight of the trip had to have been the two monstrous smallmouth bass two of the kids had on a one time.

The battle was short lived with the fish becoming intertwined and running under the boat and getting broke off by the lower unit of the Yamaha Outboard.

The excitement of the kids hooting and hollering will be remembered for a long time!

I have posted a few pictures below of our outing. I have a full photo album on my Reddy Guide Service Facebook page listed as “One Step at a Time Summer Camp” to check out more photos of our day on the water.
