Who said Friday the 13th is an unlucky day?

By JOHN MCPOLAND   Wednesday, February 25, 2009 - 4:58 a.m.

During my 14-month battle against cancer I’ve had more downs than ups. But as I suspected, 2009 is going to be a lot better than 2008.

The first sign of my changing fortunes came on Friday the 13th when I learned the results of my latest scan.

The tumor on my liver is shrinking!

In December it had reduced in size from 4.1 centimeters in width to 2.8. The latest scan showed the ugly little devil had decreaed to 1.6 centimeters in width. The incredible thing with the second scan is that the tumor decreased by almost the exact same increment in consecutive scans even though there was less of the tumor to attack.

All of the hours listening to the pump send the toxic chemotherapy drugs into my veins seems to be working.

My appetite still isn’t up to par. My taste buds could use a boost. My weight is dropping a little bit at a time. But measurable progress that you can see on a computer screen does wonders for a person’s morale.

Sorry I disappeared for a couple weeks. I will try to post more frequently.

Everybody keep fighting.

We’ll see you all soon.

Haven't heard any updates lately -hope you are doing well. We just received results of our Therasphere's treatment and much to our devastation the treatment did not work -in fact the outlook is not good. I hope you are doing well with your treatments and best of luck to you.

I have been reading your story and this is great news. Just over a month ago my husband was diagnosed with Liver Cancer. Due to the size of the tumor (7cm to -9cm)it is inoperable, not a candidate for a transplant; and chemo would not be effective. They sent him home with things looking quite bleak. However they called us back in and he will be receiving a relatively experimental procedure called "theraspheres" in which radioactive glass beads are injected directly to the tumor and hopefully will shrink the tumor. There are no guarantees but we are hoping for the best. He has this done on the 18th of March. Best of luck to you.

Congrats John, It always makes one feel better when you get positive news. I hope that things continue in this direction. Did your family do a lot of bonding while watching the race a few weeks ago? Family bonding is always good for ones healing process. Best of luck and continued prayers.

Congrats, John! Yes, the 13th can be okay. My husband was born on the 13th, had major surgery recently on a Friday the 13th, came out good. Also, wanted to pass on something I saw recently on a PBS program. A man who is fighting a life-threatening disease and is a cat-lover, pictured his cat chasing the bad elements in his body, like mice, and devouring them. He is in remission for several years now and attributes a big part of that success to his visualizations. Hey, who knows, hopefully every little bit helps! God bless and stay strong. You are an inspiration, buddy!

Neil: Way to go! You are a bright glimmer of hope for so many people. The strongest people I know are the ones that take the bull by the horns and fight the nasty C! You all are my inspiration to fight through life's battles!

LoveisGood: You stated it so eloquently! You are exactly right, no matter the news, John, there are so many of us that continue to support and pray for you! You have such support, even from people like me that have never met you. We love you and what to help you remain as strong as possible!

John , Your good news is good news for lots of people . You have a renewed hope and with-in that new hope , you have give other people new hope . Thank you for sharing , thank you for giving it your all . I don't believe cancer is something you will beat if you have a negative attitude . Having watched what cancer can do to a person I know first hand hard it is to get up everyday , how hard it is to face a new day or a new doctor or even a new chemo . My heart goes out to you and your courage . Clearly it is paying off . Stick with it John . You know your body better than anyone else . My mother knew when the chemo was working and she knew when it wasn't . Her body told her. I'm sure you know exactly what i'm talking about . I am so happy for you . Thank you again for sharing your thoughts . Don't wait so long to update us next time . Good new or bad it seems a lot of us care and want only the best for you !
You have made Friday the 13th a very special day for a lot of us ! ..

John,

I read your blogs daily and find them extremely encouraging. I have been fighting this dreaded disease for 8 years, vowing to never give up. Unfortunately, the cancer has come back with a vengence (spine, ovary, hip and tail bones). Finished a fourth round of radiation on Monday and started yet another round of chemo on Tuesday. I can look forward to having hair oh, for the next 4 weeks! Yipee! ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING. Without it, I don't know where we would be. Keep up the fight. We can and will win against the big C. As far as the appetite. Meat of any kind isn't very appealing for me but on those days when I can actually taste it, I eat as much as I want. There is a chemo diet you know. See it, eat it. I have found raw potatoes to be comforting (go figure). Over the next week or so I'll probably start remembering things from 8 years ago as far as food, etc. and will pass it along to you. kEEP UP THE FIGHT...KEEP THE FAITH.
