I'm a mom with a college age kid.
Last week I saw the ugly side of blogging, along with the good side.
Apparently my comments about my son raised some eyebrows and some people who commented got mean, I think my son would call them "haters".
Thanks to readers who read what I wrote, not between the lines, and to those who saw how silly some of the reactions to my post were.
Especially to my son, Mitch Weber, who posted: "I'm Mitch Weber and I approve this message"
here's the post in question: http://gazettextra.com/weblogs/empty-nester/
Becky Weber-Johnson lives in Janesville with her husband, Tim, and without their children who are away at college. She is an account executive at WCLO/WJVL and is the Saturday morning host on WCLO. She volunteers at her church, with the Optimist club and SpotLight On Kids. Becky is a community blogger and her opinion is not necessarily that of the Janesville Gazette staff or management.

dini79 - there's a really simple solution to the fact that it "makes you feel icky." Don't read it!

Becky - the lesson here is for your to be more explicit in your communication, not condemn the responders. You might want to consider taking criticism seriously, rather than defensively, so that you can be more successful.
Also consider that whether your son had your permission was a great question for us to ask, and it was out of societal love for your son that we questioned the appropriateness of the public display. You should be happy that so many would defend your son, without even knowing him.

Becky, Your blog is just fine. When you write a public blog--and put yourself out there--you inevitably end up in the crosshairs at one time or another. It's just the nature of being in the public eye.
Readers come in all shapes and sizes, flavors and varieties. Sadly, there are some individuals who live to harass. Especially behind the anonymity of a pseudonym on a blog. They will bully, tease, argue, opine, and generally attempt to make everyone else miserable, all under the guise of freedom of speech. Fortunately they are few. Others will be people who disagree, but, perhaps, don't express themselves well "on paper." Then there will be those who truly do take issue with what you say, but are able to be considerate and thoughtful in their dissent. Most, though will read your blog, appreciate what you've written and move on.
Keep writing. Enjoy your blog. The readers do. And the few who don't? Well, they always have the option to click on a different blog.

So sorry for the double-posting. It didn't show up the first time when I clicked on "view your comment", so I posted it again. My bad. Sorry...

It would be interesting enough to talk about the actual empty nest, how it feels, what is different. There's a good pro blog out there by the same name which I have the feeling you have read. They manage it, and so can you.

I'm sorry, I still don't want bloggers to talk about their families' personal stuff, I still feel icky about it, and there was nothing hateful in my speech. Unless anyone who disagrees is a "hater." Pretty strong language that needs a very strong reason.
