Budget season nearing the end

Here's your chance to tell city officials your thoughts on the budget. It's always amusing to watch people rant online or wherever about their taxes, then come budget time, city officials and council members say hardly any (or no) residents show up to be heard.

Anyway, the city council will hold its public hearing and vote on the budget at its 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at city hall.

Here's the basics:

Total proposed tax levy for 2010 is $2,126,457. That compares to $2,133,005 as this year's levy for a decrease next year of 0.3 percent.

The assessed valuation is estimated at $321,570,000. That equals a proposed tax rate of $6.88 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. That compares to this year's rate of $6.96 for a decrease next year of 1.15 percent.

Here's some background.
