Living under a rock?

By GINA DUWE ( Contact )   Wednesday, June 24, 2009 - 7:57 p.m.

You might be if you haven't heard about all of the city's festivities for the Fourth of July.

The annual festival in Lake Leota Park is complete this year with an actual lake. The weekend kicks off by marking it with a ribbon cutting. The "Grand Re-opening of Lake Leota" will start at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, on the north shore of the lake. Speakers include Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin, State Sen. Jon Erpenbach, State Rep. Brett Davis and Mayor Sandy Decker. They will be joined by several community members and construction workers, who were essential in dredging the lake, for a ribbon cutting ceremony. A canoe and paddleboat parade will follow the event.

Then through Sunday, there's plenty of live music, sports, trolley rides, fireworks and other entertainment going on.

Will you be there?

During the non-daylight hours it's about the beer and bands. Loud bands that can easily be heard at any edge of Evill (Southside, Westside or Eastside).

As long as the $$$$$ are flowing in, this will be the norm for the July 4th weekend.

I.Q.B......Who cares if city employess post here?? As long as it's on THEIR time and on thier home PC its ok with me..

As for the F.D. run beer tent....I can't believe they don't have a $500 non-negotiable (unless you are a true towner) cover charge. IF they came to your party, that's the fee they have....

There's somewhere around 5000 people in Evansville. Of course they're going to have smaller parades, and filling up a pond is going to be a big deal. Wouldn't it sound strange if someone from Madison knocked Janesville's puny parade, and rocky brown river (as an example). As for living under a rock, I prefer that to sitting on top, and burning up in this heat!

actually worktowin the 4th parade is the only parade of the summer if you are speaking of Evansville. It does not take much to upstage Evansville's .

It's great to see water back in the old lake. Kids are there everyday fishing. Also, the Evansville 4th of July parade is one of the best parades of the summer.

I guess we can all agree, then, that everyone loves the Fourth of July in Evansville, made even more special this year with the grand reopening of Lake Leota.

We intentionally made plans to go up north for that weekend. Evansville should be ashamed of it self. Its half xxxx attempt at a Fourth of July celebration is always crappy, unless you like the beer tent.. Does not seem odd that the beer tent is sponsored i believe by the fire dept? That just sends the wrong message and their 'celebration' lacks any serious family activities. This 'hole' in the ground does not deserve to be celebrated on any level. I am assuming sole will be fund raising this weekend,, as they promised. They are so damn lame. If you want serious fun , look else where not Evansville.
