A year of Evansville stories in review

By GINA DUWE ( Contact )   Wednesday, December 30, 2009 - 3 p.m.

It’s that time of year again.

I just finished writing my portions of the Gazette’s top stories of the year.

Earlier, each reporter wrote about our favorite story of the year.

So of course, I give to you the top Evansville area stories of the year. Not so much “top” stories but more of what went on this year.

I did this pretty quickly so forgive me for missing some, but here’s a chronological collection of some of the stories we covered this year.

-- Lake Leota was dredged after voters in 2008 approved the project.

A fish stocking effort also started.

-- The fire department moved into its new station.

-- Evansville woman organizes a chronic pain support group.

-- The police department begins the accreditation process.

-- Evansville graduate Marine Cpl. Jacob “Jake” Janes suffered injuries in Afghanistan that required both his legs to be amputated.

-- Area residents recalled what life was like growing up during the Great Depression.

-- City starts eminent domain case to help fix water problems.

-- An annual “Windmills on Parade” public art exhibit begins along Main Street in summer.

-- Evansville receives $4 million in federal stimulus money for the wastewater treatment plant upgrades.

-- A crop duster crashes just north of the city.

-- Union Bank & Trust buys Amcore Bank branches in New Glarus and Belleville.

-- Ruth Ann Montgomery published the “Evansville” edition in the “Images of America” series.

-- The community felt the shock and sorrow of the deaths of two young people who committed suicide.

-- No payment was made after a former female football player and her mom drop a federal lawsuit against the district.

-- City fills its budget gap.

-- Potter Matthias James opens a new studio on Main Street.

-- Former school district employee charged with theft from the district.

-- Voters narrowly approve the purchase of a lot next to McKenna Middle School, but the board later votes against the idea.

-- John Ehle continued his Veterans History Project by recording the stories of Korean War veterans.

-- A change in the high school pom pon team uniform upsets parents.

What other stories would you add to the list?
