A sure sign of spring

I was joking about this with my colleague Ann Marie Ames the other day as I returned from an assignment, but it's so true.

How can reporters tell it's spring?

They just look at the flood of invitations they receive for groundbreaking ceremonies.

Such was the case in Evansville and Brodhead this week. Those weren't the first, and I'm sure they won't be the last.

At the Gazette, and most other newspapers, we typically don't cover groundbreakings for what they are--a group of important people lined up with gold shovels, grinning for the camera. Don't get me wrong--officials have every right and should celebrate their successes, but we just try to avoid running posed photos and the expected quotes. Instead, we try to find a way to acknowledge the project by looking for a certain angle to better explain the project.

Want to know how a reporter can tell it's fall?

Hey Gina--

I had no ribbon cuttings in my inbox Friday when you asked. But I thought of another "reporter" sign of spring.

Highway construction projects that will affect the downtowns of our communities.

Umm hmm.
