Beckman, Blackhawk and Marshfield: Beating the winter doldrums
I’m writing about spring today.
Or rather, I’m writing about the winter doldrums, and how to get through the winter without taking up inappropriate hobbies such as stabbing your spouse, committing to events that are months away or running off to Tahiti with the milkman.
The best way to get through winter is to embrace it. Start by pretending that it’s really not so bad outside, then bundle up and go for a hike.
From 5 to 8 p.m. this Friday, the Rock County Parks Advisory Committee is hosting a candlelight hike and fundraiser at Beckman Mill County Park.
The park is located at 11450 South County Highway H, west of Beloit. The park’s entrance is located at the intersection of Highway H and Millpond Road.
A trail will be lit with hundreds of candles, and festivities will include a bonfire and hot chocolate.
I’d love to go, but I’ll be busy embracing winter at the Marshfield Curling Club’s women’s bonspiel with the fabulous Olson Rink.
And speaking of curling—when am I not speaking of curling—the Blackhawk Curling Club on the Rock County Fairgrounds is inviting anyone who is interested in curling to an open house at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14. The first hour will be devoted to newcomers. It’s a fun, no-pressure kind of event.
I’d loan you my broom, but I’ll need it in Marshfield.
How do you beat the winter doldrums?

My Dad lived near Beckman Mill for a while as a child. It is a lovely park and they have interesting recurring events each year. I might have considered attending the fundraiser if I wasn't recuperating from a broken knee.
