Second Big Read coming up
I have to admit, after all my excitement about the first "Big Read" through UW-Whitewater last spring, I didn't make it to any events. (But I have read "To Kill a Mockingbird like eight times; that has to count for something, right?)
Apparently it did pretty well though, because organizers already are planning year two. This year's book will be "Sun, Stone and Shadows: 20 Great Mexican Short Stories."
I must say, I'm thrilled the Big Read is taking on an international flavor. Looks like they have a fun Mexican-themed event planned for the finale, too. Read on for more info about the 2010 Big Read:
Middle and High School students in Rock, Walworth and Jefferson Counties are invited to submit their own artwork to be considered for the official design of the region’s second Big Read. Artwork must be based on the theme “Waves Seen, Waves Heard” or another theme generated by this years’ Big Read book, Sun, Stone and Shadows: 20 Great Mexican Short Stories. One design will be chosen as the official Big Read 2010 logo and printed on 100 give-away Big Read t-shirts. The student will also receive special recognition during the event finale. Up to 20 other designs will be framed and exhibited during the month of April at Studio 84, in Whitewater.
Submissions are due on February 5th by noon to the Young Auditorium. Finalists will receive tickets to the final Big Read event, Sones de Mexico on May 4th at 7:30 p.m. Interested Art Teachers and students can receive full details at http://youngauditorium.wordpress.com or by calling the Young Auditorium at 262-472-4444.
This National Endowment for the Arts Big Read Grant gives young adults the opportunity to learn more about reading, writing, different cultures, and to explore their interest in these areas. This year’s Big Read book is Sun, Stone, and Shadows 20 Great Mexican Short Stories. This book provides unique snapshots of Mexican culture. The Big Read this year includes library readings, poetry and theatre workshops, a t-shirt competition and art show, and the final big event, a musical and dance performance by Sones de Mexico on May 4th.
The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.
